From Long Island to Jamaica: South Shore Charter Delivers Hope

When Hurricane Melissa made its devastating landfall in Jamaica in late October 2025, it left behind a trail of destruction that continues to affect countless families and communities months later. Homes were damaged, essential resources became scarce, and many residents, especially in rural areas, were left struggling to rebuild their lives. Though separated by distance, South Shore Charter School in Central Islip, Long Island, felt a strong call to action.

Guided by a deep commitment to service and community, South Shore Charter School rose to support those in need. At the forefront of this effort was Executive Director, Dermoth Mattison, whose personal ties to Jamaica transformed concern into immediate and meaningful action. Motivated by both compassion and connection, Mr. Mattison spearheaded a coordinated relief initiative aimed at addressing urgent needs on the island.

Under his leadership, South Shore’s Executive Team quickly mobilized partnerships, organizing resources to create a structured response. Collaborating with trusted South Shore Charter partners, the team focused on gathering and delivering essential supplies including food, water, diapers, hygiene products and other basic survival items to one of the communities that was hit hardest by the storm.

The key focus of the initiative was the parish of St. Elizabeth, a region significantly impacted by Hurricane Melissa. With the assistance of local leader Bishop Glenton O. Dennis, South Shore Charter ensured that aid would reach the individuals and families who needed it most. Furthermore, South Shore Charter School’s Executive Director, Mr. Mattison was boots on the ground when the barrel arrived. This partnership helped bridge the distance between Long Island and Jamaica, allowing for a more direct and effective distribution of supplies.

The relief effort exemplifies South Shore Charter School’s mission driven philosophy. As a deeply engaged community-based institution, the school embraces opportunities to serve beyond its immediate surroundings, reinforcing values of service, engagement, responsibility, leadership, and global citizenship among its scholars and staff. What began as a response to a distant crisis became a powerful reflection of the school’s identity, one rooted in compassion, unity, and action.

Through this initiative, South Shore Charter School has not only provided tangible assistance but has also demonstrated the meaningful impact that a dedicated community can have while being miles apart. Their efforts serve as a powerful reminder that when communities come together with purpose and heart, meaningful change is possible, regardless of distance.

Building on this momentum, South Shore Charter School remains committed to supporting relief and recovery efforts while continuing to explore additional ways to assist communities in Jamaica and beyond.
