South Shore Charter School Leads School – University Partnership with Touro University GSE Faculty

It was a memorable and impactful day on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026, as leaders from South Shore Charter School and Touro University came together to collaborate on a shared vision: improving lives through education and strengthening the communities they serve.

The meeting was both dynamic and purposeful, centered on creating meaningful opportunities for the Suffolk County community. As two institutions deeply rooted in the region, South Shore Charter School and Touro University continue to make significant inroads in shaping future career pathways while preparing the next generation of educators and leaders.

Throughout the visit, discussions highlighted a strong alignment in core priorities, particularly around addressing literacy needs and implementing effective instructional strategies. Reflecting on the partnership, Mr. Dermoth Mattison, Founder & Executive Director of South Shore Charter School, shared his appreciation for Touro University’s continued support and collaboration. He noted that from the earliest stages of the school’s development, Touro has been a valued partner in offering guidance, supporting educator preparation, and helping expand opportunities for scholars. A highlight of the visit was the opportunity for the Touro University team to tour the school and experience its vibrant learning environment firsthand. Dr. Lampert-Shepel, along with colleagues Andrea Kane, Sharon Sullivan-Rubin, and Inna Rabinovitch, engaged with scholars and teachers, gaining authentic insight into daily classroom experiences. Their enthusiasm was evident as they interacted with students and even enjoyed a spontaneous musical performance during a classroom visit, an unforgettable moment that captured the authentic spirit of the school community.

“I vividly remember the passion and tenacity with which the founding director, Dermoth Mattison, first envisioned the South Shore Charter School. Seeing his dream so beautifully accomplished today is nothing short of amazing. During our recent visit, my colleagues from Touro University Graduate School of Education and I were deeply impressed by the learner- and inquiry-centered classrooms, where scholars of all ages demonstrate an extraordinary focus on their studies and academic success” said Dr. Lampert-Shepel.
